Orlando Hernandez: A Cuban Pitching Legend

Orlando Hernandez, also known as “El Duque,” is a retired professional baseball player from Cuba. Born in 1965 in Villa Clara, Hernandez played for Industriales of Havana in the Cuban National Series, winning the title twice. He also competed internationally for Cuba, winning gold medals at the 1992 Summer Olympics and various other championships.

In 1997, Hernandez defected from Cuba and was signed by the New York Yankees to a four-year deal worth $6.6 million. He made his Major League Baseball debut for the Yankees in 1998, where he played until 2002 and then again in 2004. Hernandez played for the Chicago White Sox in 2005, the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2006, and finished his career with the New York Mets from 2006 to 2007.

Throughout his career, Hernandez earned a bit over $33 million in salary alone, contributing to his estimated net worth of $13 million. He was a four-time World Series Champion with the Yankees and was named the American League Championship Series MVP in 1999.
